Salt/pepper hair recently bleached blond...HOW LONG must I wait to try to soften color with more dye

...my hair was black with lots of gray; put lightener on WHOLE head (big mistake); turned gray hair blonde, black hair golden yellow! I've used all the "purple" shampoo and conditioners; what can I do to correct this mistake? (I'm 55 years old tomorrow)

For your birthday, treat yourself. Call around and get an appointment to see a colorist, a good one. Be prepared to pay. Hey-it's your birthday. Be honest as to what you have already done to your hair. Explain, as best you can, what look you are going for and get their advice. Relax, and let him/her work a little magic. You're worth it!

Get Clairol Ultra blue and do again. Make sure you get a toner to soften it afterwards. Being dark takes more time(s) to strip out the color.

2 weeks. Go to a good beauty supply house(Sally's Beauty Supply is what we have here.) Get 2 really good protein conditioning packs and use them on your hair twice...once each week. The second one should be 24 hours before coloring. Then get a peroxide and amonia free color so that it's gentle. Basically what you want to do is pick a color that has little to no lift, mostly depositing color. Any color you'd like is fine as long as it does NOT say "ash". Ash will give you that lovely greenish tint we all love so much. Best bet is to go with a color that says "Golden". Hope this helps!

You don't have to wait to soften. There are codes on the box with #s and letters.1 is black and 10 is white.Lighter than platinum.

The first letter is tone.G-gold, R-red, A-ash.The second letter is the color.B-brown, BL-blond, and so on.The rule is to pick a shade no more than 2 away from yours. My guess is you are an 8 now.Because you want to soften you would look at 6-8.If you are tying to get the yellow out use ash.Ash scares me because it can look green.Goldens are a safe bet and you are just going 1 or 2 shades down. The color will give a more even result.Hope I helped.Happy Birthday.
